- The power of a rocket is in traveling in one direction very quickly.
Focus is power.
Over and over again we are told to focus. But as business owners we don't... or do we?
Perhaps the issue isn't so much our not focusing, but how we do it. How can we gain better focus in our business?
Or better yet, how do we gain the insight to better focus our business?
You see, if the whole business isn't focused, there is little chance the processes inside will be... and who cares if they are in that case anyway?
Focus chaos is still chaos. Anyway... A great way to gain greater focus in your business is to learn to appreciate focus. An effective way to learn the appreciation of focus is to see the extremes of it.
Extremes? What are you talking about?
Well, extremes were how you learned to walk. You learned (unconsciously) that having your head too far forward (extreme) made you fall down. If you bent your legs too much you fall down. If you lean too much to one side - fall down. If you take too big a step - fall down. It was extreme after extreme until you got it. So, seeing and learning the extremes can be a big factor in mastering a skill. Focusing your business is a skill. But learning a skill doesn't have to be boring. Let's have some fun. Rather than throw up extreme business examples plucked from someone else's experience, let's have you figure out your own stuff. To do this, let's not talk business, directly, but use a metaphor. Tennis.
Tennis and Focus
Imagine you are playing in a tennis match. See yourself, moment by moment focusing like these scenarios below. Note: We are talking your whole business, not necessary processes in your business - though if you want you could use it for that.
Therefore translate the example into the equivalent for focusing your whole business.
Tool Focus
What if the tennis player focused intently and only upon their racket -- throughout the whole match?
What results would you get? What would be the equivalent of your business doing this? What would it look like? How would the business act? How does your business act like this?
Cycling Focus
What if the tennis player changed their focus every point? First point, the net. Second, the cute brunette in the third row. Third, the judge. Fourth, the color of the sky. Results? What's your business equivalent? How does your business act like this?
Future FocusWhat if the tennis player focused intently upon standing upon the podium holding the championship cup - while hitting the ball, point after point? What would be the consequences of such a focus? Now, what would it be like in the reality of your business?
Past Focus
What if the tennis player focused intently, moment by moment, upon a point they lost in a previous match? Resulting experiences? In business what would this be?
Opponent Focus
What if the tennis player was focused upon their opponent the entire match, I mean REALLY focused, even when they got water, after a point, in between games, after they've hit the ball... How would this show up in business?
Ball Focus
What if a tennis player focused on the ball, ALL THE TIME?. After points, as it rolls into the net, in the ball boys' hands as you sit, resting between sets... basically, all the time. What would be the equivalent in your business? What do we get from this? No matter what, you're going to focus. Even if you meditate you are focusing on not thinking. If you try not focus on anything you hand over the control of your focus to whatever catches your attention.
You cannot escape it. Focus is powerful. Learn to appreciate it and you'll learn to make your business focused.
